A former Carson High School football player pleaded guilty in Justice Court on Wednesday to a misdemeanor steroid charge in a plea bargain with prosecutors.

Andrew Maier, 18, was given a six-month suspended sentence after admitting to possession of drugs that are prohibited in interstate commerce. The charge, plus drug possession, are the only misdemeanors under Nevada law.

Maier was charged in February with steroid and drug paraphernalia possession. His arrest sparked an investigation into Carson High School athletics that ended quietly in early May.

Steroids are a performance-enhancing drug used illegally by some athletes.

No additional arrests were made in connection with the investigations.

In addition to the suspended sentence, Maier has been ordered to perform 80 hours of community service. If he is arrested again or violates the terms of formal probation, Maier may be forced to spend the six months in jail.
