YERINGTON - A Fernley manufacturer that uses recycled materials is seeking a 25 percent tax break from Lyon County commissioners today.
The board voted Oct. 5 to recommend to the Nevada Commission on Economic Development that TREX Inc., be granted a tax abatement of 25 percent for five years on both real and personal property taxes. County officials have since learned no limit can be set on the percentage of the abatement.
TREX manufactures deck materials using a combination of wood and recycled plastic products. According to state law, a business making a product in which at least 50 percent of the material or product is recycled on site is eligible to apply to the Commission on Economic Development for a 75 percent exemption of personal and real property taxes.
Personal property may be exempted for up to 10 consecutive years and real property for up to 20 years.
The state commission has certified that TREX is eligible, but the certification is conditioned on the signed agreement between the county and the company. A similar request from TREX was approved in October 1998.
Other agenda items include:
- Possible action on approval of a resolution stating Lyon County's opposition to "The Nevada Tax Fairness & Quality School Funding Accountability Act," known as the teachers' union 4 percent income tax initiative petition.
- Possible action on county authorization to waive building permit fees, and to sign-off for delinquent taxes for qualified applicants in the Silver Springs Wastewater Treatment District. The board will also consider establishing guidelines for eligibility.
The Lyon County Commission meet at 9 a.m. in the Administrative Complex at 27 South Main St. in Yerington. For information call 577-5037 (Dayton/Silver Springs) or 463-6531.
