Two criminologists and an University of Nevada, Reno economics professor who co-wrote a study for the National Institute of Justice on the effect casino gambling has on communities will present their findings at a roundtable discussion today at the Westin St. Francis Hotel, San Francisco.
"When communities decide to add a casino, the effects are a mixed bag: some good, some bad," according to Grant Stitt, UNR professor, chairman of the Department of Criminal Justice and co-author of a two-year National Institute of Justice study to examine the impact of casino gambling in U.S. jurisdictions where the industry is relatively new.
Stitt, Mark Nichols, assistant professor of economics/gaming at Nevada, and David Giacopassi, criminal justice professor at the University of Memphis, will present their findings at the American Society of Criminology conference.
