Gov. Kenny Guinn has been named chairman of the Education Commission of the States.
The commission is a national bipartisan group that works with state officials to improve education and student achievement.
"Through organizations like ECS we can learn from other states and pass on the lessons we've learned in Nevada," said Guinn.
The commission picked Guinn noting his experience in education. He started as a teacher, rising to superintendent of the Clark County School District and later president of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas before running for governor.
"Having a governor with such an extensive background in education as the chair of ECS will help us greatly in our communication efforts," said Christie McElhinney of the commission.
"Education is the key to the future success and prosperity of our state," said Guinn. "We will not be able to compete economically without an educated work force."
