Letter: Much work put into hospital affiliation

This is in response to the advertisement "Advisory Vote, Carson-Tahoe Hospital."

I am reacting to the above advertisement that was printed in the Nevada Appeal on Oct. 22, paid for by the Committee to Elect Tom Tatro, regarding an advisory vote by the voters of Carson City on the proposal to either sell or affiliate Carson-Tahoe Hospital.

The proposal is naive with a lack of understanding of the process that has taken place by the administration, medical staff and board of trustees. The board of trustees, who were elected by the community, has the responsibility for the operation of the hospital. The board hires the professional hospital administrator to handle the day to day operations under broad policy established by the board of directors. The intent of the advertisement is political and not constructive.

There has been involvement of a citizens task force, affiliation task force involving medical staff, employees, administration, board and community on this issue. There has been ongoing dialogue on the hospital's Web page, board meetings and news media. I am sensitive to the lay public's perception that the information is not complete but when you are in the process of negotiations, it has to be held in private.

The end result of this process is to ensure what is best for the patients and the community. I have my personal views since I recently retired after more than 36 years in hospital administration.

Let the board, administration and medical staff do its job. A state of the art hospital including economic impact to the community and most important the provision of appropriate health services to clients at competitive prices should be the end result of this process.
