I am writing in response to a letter which appeared Nov. 12 from Sheri Abreu. We have something in common with our sons.
My son goes to Carson Middle School and he loves basketball, and like your son, he wasn't chosen to play on the team. He has tried every year and not made it. We found a solution which helped soothe his disappointment and may help your son too.
The Community Center has a program for kids called City League Basketball. Kids up to eighth grade can play. Sign-ups are over, but if you call Joel Dunne, he may get your son in so he can play. There is a small registration fee. Workouts are this Saturday and practice starts in December/January.
The kids have a great time and everybody gets to play on a team. I don't know what to do about next year when my son will be too old for city league, but it helps now.
Give Joel a call and see what he can do for your son, and I hope you can get him in. Tell your son it's not a school team, but it is competitive and very "real" basketball, just not "blood and guts" like the school teams, and he'll have to play to win.
