New storm set to roll in today

A repeat of Tuesday's snowfall may be in the works for tonight.

Accumulations of up to 5 inches at Lake Tahoe are expected from a storm moving through California today.

National Weather Service meteriologist Mark Deutschendorf said temperatures will determine whether snow will fall in the valleys.

The storm should reach Western Nevada by late afternoon and continue through early Thursday morning.

"There is still a question about what we will get from the storm," Deutschendorf said. "If it moves too far south, most of the precipitation will stay on the west side of the Sierra."

However, Deutschendorf said there is a good chance that some sort of precipitation will fall.

Another storm may roll in Sunday, but it may pass north of Carson City.

Tuesday's early morning snowfall dropped up to an inch of snow in the valleys of Western Nevada and up to a foot of snow in the Sierra.

The weather is predicted to dry out next week, Deutschendorf said.

"There's not much for the snow people to get excited about in the longer term," he said. "We'll see a few dry days early next week."

Extreme cold temperatures expected to arrive this week never materialized.

"It looks like we got a break from the cold, which stayed to the east of the Rockies," Deutschendorf said

He said the temperatures are close to seasonal normals.

Chains or snow tires were required early Tuesday on Interstate 80 over Donner Summit, U.S. 50 over Echo Summit and all other mountain passes.

Travel restrictions were also in place on U.S. 395 through Washoe Valley between Reno and Carson City.

Slippery roads over Donner Summit were blamed for an accident that tied up westbound traffic on Interstate 80 for five hours Monday night when a big-rig truck overturned.

No one was injured and no other major accidents were reported.
