CARSON CITY, Nev. - State Parole Board Chairman Richard Wyett has announced his resignation just five months after taking the post.

In a letter to Gov. Kenny Guinn, Wyett said he would leave the $78,000-a-year job on Dec. 15 because of ''recent conflicts'' and ''inappropriate activity'' that undermine the board's credibility.

''Tolerating that activity would mean condoning it and I cannot in good conscience remain on the board knowing I do not have the support of your office to halt this behavior,'' he wrote.

Wyett didn't elaborate in his letter and he didn't immediately return a telephone message left at his home. Officials in the governor's office declined to elaborate.

Wyett retired as administrator of the state Division of Parole and Probation a year ago and came out of retirement to take the Parole Board post.

RENO, Nev. - The highest-ranking female Sparks police officer has been selected as the first female police chief for the Washoe County School Distirct.

Lt. Tamara Evans, who began her law enforcement career as a Reno police dispatcher in 1981, assumes the position Dec. 4.

Last December, she filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against the Sparks Police Department, claiming senior officers permitted other officers to make sexual slurs about her.

The case is scheduled for trial in March in U.S. District Court in Reno.

As school police chief, Evans will lead 25 sworn officers and two civilian employees.

Walt Lyman, interim chief, has been transferred at his own request to do investigations for district legal counsel Jeff Blanck.

RENO, Nev. - A local couple have been arrested on suspicion of abusing their 2-month-old child.

The infant was taken Thursday to Washoe Medical Center, where it's being treated for a skull fracture and fractured ribs.

Bryan Moore, 28, and his wife, Shannon, 33, were booked Friday into the Washoe County Jail on child abuse charges.

Washoe County sheriff's detective Mike Matthews said the Spanish Springs couple made inconsistent statements regarding how the child was injured.

He said investigators gathered physical evidence and evaluated medical findings before arresting them.

The infant has been placed in the care of Child Protective Services officials.
