Carson and Douglas will observe a tradition welcoming new officers to county government on New Year's Day.

Nearly a dozen Carson City officials are scheduled to be sworn in at 9 a.m. on Monday by Judge William Maddox.

Among those scheduled to be sworn are new city Supervisor Richard Staub and school board trustee Joanna Wilson.

Mayor Ray Masayko will be master of ceremonies and minister Bruce Henderson of the Airport Road Church of Christ will give the invocation.

Clerk/recorder Alan Glover will present certificates of election.

In Douglas County, Clerk-Treasurer Barbara Reed said she is expecting all three incumbent commissioners and the new Lake Tahoe justice of the peace to attend.

"We have never done anything other than the first Monday in January," she said. "When the first falls on that Monday, the law says we have to swear everybody in."

District Judges Dave Gamble and Michael Gibbons will officiate at the ceremony.

Whether Douglas County teacher Randy Green shows up to claim his school board seat may be determined by Gibbons on Friday.

Green's election is being challenged by the Douglas County School Board.

Reed said she has been contacted by other school board members and told they won't be coming to Monday's ceremony.

This year there won't be a reception after the ceremony in Douglas.

"We think people will want to be on their ways right after the swearing in," Reed said.

The last time Steve Weissinger, Jacques Etchegoyhen and Kelly Kite were sworn in, much of Carson Valley was under water.

"Four years ago, we had the flood and all the roads were closed," Reed said. "We had to wait for Steve to arrive. It doesn't look anything like that is going to happen this week."

A spokeswoman in the Lyon County Clerk's office said they plan on swearing in officials on Tuesday because the office will be closed on New Year's Day.
