One person was killed and several injured in a rash of accidents that occurred Friday afternoon.

The rider of a moped was killed about four miles west of Carson City on Highway 50 in a 3:44 p.m. accident. The identity of the rider was not released pending notification of next of kin.

Highway Patrol troopers were still sorting out the accidents Friday night, but it appeared that most were weather related.

Trooper Troy Lindley said there were 13 accidents between 3:30 p.m. and 4: 30 p.m., 10 of which were on Highway 395 between Steamboat and the top of Washoe Hill.

"People are simply driving too fast for conditions," he said. "This is the first storm of the season and people are going too fast."

Lindley said that he has been in a marked patrol car and seen people pass him at faster than the 50 mph posted speed limit along that stretch of the highway.

"There is a reason for the speed limit," he said. "The road twists and has several curves. You have people on a regular basis who do faster than the speed limit and then you add rain on top of it."

Some of the accidents caused others, as traffic slowed and stopped along the highway.

Lindley pointed out that the maximum speed along Highway 395 between Washoe Hill and Steamboat is set for perfect conditions.

"When it rains, you need to slow down," he said. "People have just flat fialed to travel at speeds safe for the roadway."

The front that passed through Western Nevada on Friday should move on today, leaving sunny skies, but much cooler temperatures.

Today's high temperature is expected to be 65 and the low 35 degrees.
