Robber hits ATM one block from sheriff's department

A bold robbery - less than one block from the Carson City Sheriff's Department - had investigators combing East Carson on Thursday, coming up empty handed.

An undisclosed amount of money was stolen at 9 a.m. when a man approached two technicians working on an automatic teller behind Greater Nevada Credit Union at 911 East Second Street.

Without showing a weapon, he demanded money from the pair and ran down an alley with canisters containing cash from the machine.

Chief Deputy Scott Burau said although his officers were at the bank within minutes, the man could not be located. The department is one block away at 901 East Musser Street.

The suspect is described as black, 25 years old, 6-foot-1 and thin. He had a shaved head, no facial hair and was wearing a blue sweatshirt and black nylon pants. Anyone with information about the crime or the suspect is urged to call the detectives' division at 887-2020 ext. 1400.

Burau was hesitant to share information about forensic evidence, but said the suspect was not recorded by surveillance cameras. He said the amount stolen might be released after an arrest is made.

"We think this is somebody that monitored the routine of the bank workers," he said. "He knew when to hit."

The ATM is located at the back of the bank's parking lot nearly 10 feet from the alley. The robber made his getaway running south.

The technicians, a man and woman, were told to turn the canisters over, Burau said. The suspect also warned them not to activate any alarms. He said the robbery victims were working on the machine, not refilling the cash canisters.

Patrolling units were immediately sent to scour the neighborhood surrounding the bank. Back yards and apartment and motel complexes within a perimeter of several blocks were searched without success.
