Student enrollment up this year at Carson City schools

Preliminary counts show that nearly 65 more students are enrolled in Carson City schools this year than last year.

The district's official count last year was 8,363. School officials reported 8,427 students on Friday.

However, Superintendent Jim Parry expects that number to drop by about 100 students by Sept. 22, the district's official count day.

Parry said that the elementary schools are counting students who actually show up to school, while the high school is counting the total number registered, of which about 100 have not shown up.

"The caveat is that the high school is listed as 2,452," he said. "When the dust settles, the high school will be around 2,350."

The adjustment will drop the total to around 8,350, which will be near last year's total.

"I think it's going to be very close to status quo," Parry said. "I don't expect we'll get any more between now and count day."

Kindergarten enrollment is at 602 this year, slightly below the 650-student average in the other classes.

"We're getting to the point where every class has just about the same amount," Parry said.

School district officials also signed the charter for Pathways High School, the charter school sponsored by Rite of Passage, on Friday.

Parry said that between eight to 12 students have shown interest or have picked up applications to the school.

Organizers had originally hoped for 24 students but plan to open within the next two weeks with about 10 students and hope to reach 24 by Christmas.

The school will take students who have disciplinary problems at the high school or who are referred to the school through the juvenile court system.
