WNCC offers child day care center

Finding good child care can often be difficult, especially for parents who are in school or for parents who have children in school.

However, Western Nevada Community College and the Carson City Recreation Division are working to make it a little bit easier.

The college's child development center offers daytime care from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This fall the hours will be expanded to include evening hours from 5:15 p.m. to 10:15 p.m. to accommodate parents who take night classes.

"We want to serve the students in a broader manner," said Andrea Bennett, the director of the center. "It's just a way of enhancing our services."

The city's recreation division serves up to 280 students throughout the district with before- and after-school care at each of the sites.

The program runs from 6:30 a.m. until school starts and from the time school gets out until 5:30 p.m.

"It's a safe and fun place for children to stay until their parents can pick them up," said Bonnie Fahrenbruch, recreation specialist. "They must be signed in and signed out and nobody can randomly come in and pick them up."

Fahrenbruch said the program offers a variety of activities, including arts and crafts, field trips and swimming lessons.

Registration for the program will be held Saturday morning at the community center.

In order to qualify for the evening hours at the college, parents must provide current immunization records and a copy of their class schedule to to verify enrollment.

Children must be between the ages of 3 and 12 and be potty trained. The center will be open Monday through Friday and the cost is $2 per hour per child.
