Carson River Park to close for renovations

The Carson River Park next to Lloyd's Bridge on Carson River Rd. will be closed until December 31 to allow improvements to the area.

Carson City's Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a ceremony Thursday at noon to kick off work at the new park.

The $95,000 project on the west side of the river includes the addition of a 490-square-foot fishing pier that will be wheelchair accessible. A portable restroom will be added to the area. Several trails and trailheads will be added including trails for those in wheelchairs.

The second phase of the project will include grass, a playground area and more trails.

Bids for project improvements at the Carson River Park came in higher than expected, forcing park and recreation staff to cut some improvements from the list. Park Planner Vern Krahn said bids for park improvements came in between $120,000 and $127,000 and the project budget was only $95,000.

A concrete boat ramp and a gate to keep night-time campers from the park were removed from the list as well as a few aesthetic and erosion control improvements.

Krahn describes the future project on the east side of the river as "more low key." The east side project includes about $109,000 in erosion control improvements. Construction on the east side should begin in November.
