Eaken arrested on child endangerment charges

A Carson City woman, Sheila C. Eaken, 34, was arrested Wednesday on six charges of child endangerment after deputies reportedly found six unsupervised children living in squalid conditions.

Deputies responded to a call by a neighbor in the 600 block of Hot Springs Road in the morning and when they arrived, there was no response at the front door.

A look through a window revealed disarray, "as if a garbage truck had been dumped inside instead of in a landfill," according to the report. A 7-year-old girl was supervising two naked babies, ages 1 and 2, who had a fever and appeared ill. There was no indication on the report as to the location of the other children at the time of the arrest.

When Eaken returned home, she reportedly gave excuses for the condition of the house and admitted to leaving the children unsupervised. She told deputies one of the children had been feverish and vomiting for several days.

Child and Family Services was called and a caseworker told deputies the agency had been involved with Eaken for some time and that the situation was ongoing. The children were taken into protective custody.

If convicted, Eaken could serve as much as one year in Carson City Jail for each count and pay up to $2,000 in fines for each count.

Bail was set at $15,000.
