A Pinon Hills Elementary School fourth-grader won his category of the 2000 Nevada State Fair Essay Contest.
The Douglas County fourth-grader, Nathan Imelli, titled his essay "A State Fair Through Time." In it he wrote of the 1900s when "families went to the Nevada State Fair on horses, in wagons, or by foot," ending his essay with his vision of the future when "we will go to the Nevada State Fair in our own personal hover-crafts and people will be seeing all the latest in technology."
Working with the theme "The Nevada State Fair Where the Past Meets the Future," every child in the state was invited to write an essay. Winners were selected in different grade categories (1-3, 4-6 and 7-8) with each winner receiving a blue ribbon, along with being invited, along with their families, to be guests of honor at the opening ceremonies of the Nevada State Fair. Each winning student's teacher will also receive a $100 cash award for the class, and everyone who entered will receive a participant ribbon and a free ticket to the 2000 Nevada State Fair.
"They were all really creative," said Chris McMullen, a state fair board member and judge. "It took a long time to narrow it down to only one winner per category."
The 2000 Nevada State Fair will take place Aug. 23-27 at the Reno Livestock Events Center.
