Reading the editorial page is one of my favorite items within the Nevada Appeal to get a perspective of how the community feels and what is important. I want to let the readers know what exactly your paper accomplished for 20 students at both middle schools.
Teri Vance, your educational reporter, took the time to do a wonderful article about children who would be unable to attend graduation because of lack of appropriate clothing. Because of her article, we generated enough funding to sponsor all 20 children.
The phone calls came pouring in from all over the community, the first three from people who said they had read the article and wanted these children to enjoy their eighth grade graduation like everyone else.
I cannot thank everyone who came into each middle school individually with gift certificates, but I can tell you each one of these children will always remember your kindness. J.R. Seals Landscape Co., Roy Farrow and Joanne Kennedy called all with the same statements, to get those children clothing, stockings, socks and shoes, whatever they need. Also a special thank you to one of our community retailers, JC Penney, for opening up early so these kids could enjoy shopping with a personal shopper.
Thank you, Shawn Galuska, for helping all the boys pick out those really cool clothes. They had a blast. This is really what our community is all about; generous, kind, supportive. Thank you to all the people who supported these children. I feel privileged to live in Carson City.
So again, thank you, Nevada Appeal, for your coverage on the real issue, helping the children.
