Letter: CASA needs volunteers

CASA of Carson City will soon begin a training session. Primarily, CASA volunteers advocate in Carson City's Juvenile Court for children who have been removed from their homes by the state due to abuse or neglect. By state law, all such children are to have a volunteer advocate.

CASA volunteers are trained by our local program and asked to volunteer for two years. Each volunteer serves on at least two cases. Volunteering as a CASA takes about 10 hours early in a case, then about five hours per month. Cases last about 1 1/2 years.

The CASA speaks for the best interest of the child. Volunteering as a CASA means making a difference in the lives of very vulnerable children at a time when they are in great transition. The CASA is not a big brother or a big sister. Rather, the CASA provides information to the court to help the court in making decisions that will affect these children for the rest of their lives.

CASA volunteers gain a new understanding of social problems and of children's needs. The CASA plays a part in addressing those issues. While CASA advocacy remains confidential, the CASA serves as part of a dedicated team and the work is rewarding. CASA volunteers make a difference.
