RENO - For Brian and Sheryl Herr, work at Nevada Bell has truly been a family affair.
The couple announced their retirement Monday, after nearly 100 years of continuing family service. For the Herrs' ancestors also worked with the phone company for the past century.
"My career has spanned the most fascinating era in telecommunications history, from rotary dial phones to broadband communications," said Brian.
Brian has worked for Nevada Bell for nearly 28 years. He began his career with the company in the mailroom and had many jobs before moving to his current position as executive director or external affairs, where he has represented Nevada Bell among legislators and regulators in the state capitol since 1985.
"I am proud to have worked for a company that is as committed to providing the highest quality telecommunication services as it is to make a difference in the communities it serves," he said.
Sheryl was hired in 1974 as an operator and is finishing her career at Nevada Bell as an account executive in marketing sales.
The couple has given the company nearly 54 years in service between the two of them.
Nevada Bell President Marsha Lindsey said the company has been fortunate to have so many committed long-term employees.
"Longevity and loyalty to employers is hard to come by in today's fast-paced Internet economy," she said. "The Herrs' contribution and dedication will be missed throughout Nevada Bell."
The family tradition started early. Brian's grandfather, father, mother and two sisters all worked for Nevada Bell. And, Sheryl's grandmother, mother and sister worked as operators from 1900 to the 1970s.
Brian said that they are looking forward to retirement, so they'll be able to spend time with their family, playing golf and traveling.
