Nevada Day vacancies possible

Lodging likely will be available in Carson City during the first official three-day Nevada Day weekend, hotel and motel clerks said Wednesday.

While the larger hotels anticipate full houses Friday and Saturday night, some smaller operations expect the "VACANCY" signs to be left on all weekend.

Days Inn at the north end of Carson Street and the Motel Orleans toward the south end never sell out for Nevada Day, clerks said.

Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau executive director Candy Duncan said a check last week showed the major properties will probably be filled this weekend. The bureau, which operates a reservation referral service for area hotels and motels, will check again today for room availability, Duncan said Wednesday.

Since Nevada Day 1998, the Pinon Plaza added a 64-room hotel and the Plaza Motel added 80 rooms, bringing local capacity to about 1,700 rooms, Duncan said.

But the larger properties do not have a lock on full houses when its time for the Nevada Day Parade.

The Desert Hills Motel, whose lawn is a prime parade-watching spot, is also the annual headquarters for Shriners bringing their fezzes and Briggs and Stratton-powered contraptions for the parade.

At the Nugget Motel, the Double Mountain Brigade has snapped up 20 rooms, but 15 others were still open Wednesday afternoon.

Among the lodgings expected to be full for the celebration are the City Center Motel, the Super 8 Motel, the Ormsby House, Carson Station and Pinon Plaza.

Vacancy signs may be on at the Hardman House, Days Inn, the Nugget Motel and Motel Orleans.
