Archie Alexander Murchie, 91, a Carson City resident since the mid-1950s, died Dec. 18,1999, at his residence.

A private memorial will be held at a later date.

Mr. Murchie was born Feb. 10, 1908, in Sarles, N.D., to James Murchie and Laura Peterson Murchie. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Jane, in 1995.

Prior to living in Carson City, he resided in Ely.

Mr. Murchie went to forestry school in Missoula, Mont. He had a very happy and fulfilling career as a forest ranger while in the U.S. Forest Service from 1929-1965,

After retirement from the forest service, he and his wife made a retirement project out of converting a one-acre tract of sagebrush into their dream home with gardens and an orchard. The project was a labor of love. Archie was lucky to participate in the University of Nevada, Reno, oral history program. The book they published gave him a great deal of joy and pride.

Among his survivors are his sons, Jim Murchie of Manteca, Calif., and John Murchie of Beaver, Utah; daughter, Jean Betts of Reno, and Carol Gunderson of Carson City, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Cremation is under the direction of Walton's Sierra Crematory in Carson City.

Walton's Chapel of the Valley in Carson City is in charge of arrangements.

Contributions may be made to a local hospice organization, St. Mary's Foundation, 3264 Goni Road, Suite 151, Carson City, 89706, or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 21775, Carson City, 89721.
