Obituary George Burelson

George Burelson, 76, an Apple Valley, Calif., resident, died Oct. 17, 1999, at St. Mary's Hospital in Apple Valley. He was born Aug. 27, 1923, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Burt and Mary Burelson.

He graduated from Cathedral High School in Los Angeles in 1941 where he was a member of the track team.

He was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II and served on the USS Hermes and attack transport USS Arthur Middleton in the South Pacific. He also saw combat action with ground troops in the Philippines.

After the war he joined the Los Angeles Police Department but was called up by the U.S. Navy for the Korean War. He served at the naval base in Port Hueneme, Calif., during that time and returned to the LAPD when the war ended.

Most of his LAPD career was spent at the Newton Division with the Detective Bureau. He retired from the LAPD in 1971 with 23 years of service. After a brief retirement, he went to work as a prison guard for the State of Nevada in Carson City. He retired in 1993 and moved to Apple Valley to be near his sister.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Beverly, and his second wife, Marianna.

Among his survivors are a son, Michael, of Chico, Calif.; daughter, Randy Benson, of Grand Terrace, Calif.; stepdaughter, Betty Liesemeyer of Altus Air Force Base in Oklahoma; brother, John "Bud" of Whittier, Calif.; sister, Ruby McCullough of Apple Valley and six grandchildren.

At Mr. Burelson's request, no services will be held. His ashes will be scattered at sea by the Neptune Society.
