Obituary: George S. Hopkins

A memorial service with full military honors for George S. Hopkins, 78, a Gardnerville resident for the past nine years, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Veterans Cemetery in Fernley.

A Mass of Resurrection will be at 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11, at St. Gall Catholic Church in Gardnerville with the Rev. Bill Nadeau celebrant.

Mr. Hopkins died Sept. 22, 1999, at his residence. He was born Oct. 12, 1920, in Paris, France, to George V. and Clarisse Heraud Hopkins.

He married Catherine Yasko on Nov. 4, 1946, in Hollywood, Calif.

Before moving to Gardnerville, he lived in Mar Vista, Calif.

Mr. Hopkins was a manufacturing engineer, manufacturing the environmental control systems for the Gemini and Apollo space missions. He also helped develop the environmental control system for the M-1 Tank. He was a Roman Catholic and a member of St. Gall Catholic Church.

He enjoyed fixing things and watching football on TV. He had a special gift of wit, loved the USC football team and enjoyed spending time with his family.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

Among his survivors are his wife, Catherine, of Gardnerville; sons, James V. C. of Placerville, Calif., Thomas George, of Huntington Beach, Calif. and Glenn John, of Minden; daughter, Sharon C. Rodriguez, of Mar Vista; brother, John A., of Santa Monica, Calif.; niece, Lorraine Osborne, of Santa Monica; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Cremation will be at FitzHenry's Crematory.

FitzHenry's Carson Valley Funeral Home, Gardnerville, is in charge of arrangements.
