120 YEARS AGO

Returns of the School Census Marshal for 1879 and 1880 show 398 boys (6 to 18), 358 girls, a jump from 358 to 463, total children 861 in that group. Number born in Nevada was 865. One deaf and dumb and one blind (new over last year). Those between 4 and 6 in school was 36.

100 YEARS AGO

Woodfords Hotel at the famous resort was destroyed by fire, at 12 o'clock at night with all the guests saved. Each room was full of lodgers. The stable and store were saved by efforts of the guests with the assistance of Indians who live in the neighborhood. Ed Dupuis rushed in to save his prized fish, but was only able to save a five gallon demijohn of whiskey instead.

70 YEARS AGO

The new telephone office building at Telegraph and Carson streets replaces the oldest building remaining on the main street of the city but its removal bears no regrets. It was originally a stockade and fort, made of adobe and fortified during the early Indian troubles.

50 YEARS AGO

Mercury creeps up to 101 Thursday (June 29) while Sacramento has a torrid day with 107. Highway department records show 100 degrees recorded during a June day, but the hottest day ever recorded in Carson City was a torrid afternoon of 105 in July of 1935. June 30 temperatures stood at 101 at 3 p.m.

20 YEARS AGO

Elko - A dynamite blast Friday will begin work on Freeport Gold Co.'s Jerritt Canyon Mine 50 miles north of Elko. It is expected to produce 200,000 troy ounces of gold each year, doubling Nevada's gold output.

10 YEARS AGO

Committee to select Carson City's new fire chief has six finalists for the $41,000 to $58,240 job.
