Street Talk: Kathy & Clyde - A love story with a bar attached to it!

To tell you about Kathy Aguirre we have to first tell you about her mom and dad.

We'll start with her mom Rachel, who outdid both Elizabeth Taylor and Mickey Rooney when it came to the number of times she was married.

"Mom was married 11 times before she died from Alzheimer's at age 59 in 1986," said Kathy. "I was her only child. I lived with my dad Larry from age 5 on. My daddy was a dynamite salesman. He was a roustabout on oil rigs. He died eight years ago from a heart attack at age 73 in Texas."

Kathy is 52 and was born in San Angelo, Texas.

"It's a town the size of Carson City in mid-Texas," said Kathy. "Ernest Tubbs was born there. My mom dated him for awhile before he ever made it big."

Kathy was not born at home, or in a hospital, either.

"I was born in a chiropractor's office," she said, laughing as she continued. "Mom never went to a regular doctor. She knew the chiropractor and even though he told her to go to a doctor, she didn't and he delivered me."

Kathy and Clyde got married nine years ago at South Lake Tahoe. He is 69 and was born in Santa Ana, Calif. It's his fifth and her fourth marriage.

"My mom and dad (Fay & Leonard) are gone too," said Clyde. "I was only 11 when dad died from a brain tumor. He was only 44 years old. Mom was 77 when she passed away 25 years ago. My older brother Leonard lives in Fresno and my younger sister Coni lives in Madera, Calif."

We were visiting in their Carson City home and Kathy, who has two daughters and a son, was talking about how she and son Jim were reunited.

"I was a 17-year old unwed mother when Jim was born and I gave him up for adoption at birth," she informed. "We reunited eight years ago when he found me through the church. I understand most reunitements don't work out but ours did. It's nice that it did and we're very close now."

Kathy's daughter Julie is 32 and lives in Ft. Worth, Texas.

"She's the mother of two boys," added Kathy happily. "Katie is 30 and lives here in Carson City with her husband Walt. They were married at Harvey's Chapel in Stateline last August."

Clyde has four daughters and seven grandchildren as well as six great grandchildren.

"My oldest is Cherie and she turns 48 on Tuesday," said Clyde proudly. "She lives in Stagecoach and is a Lieutenant in the Nevada Prison System. She runs the women's camp (Silver Springs Conservation Camp) in Silver Springs. Babett is 45 and lives in Carson City. Dede is 42 and Jackie is 32 and both live in Fresno, Calif."

Clyde has been in law enforcement all his life and is now retired from Nevada State Prison. He was also a football star in his high school days.

"I went to Madera High School and I was the star of the team," he bragged as he showed me some photos and posters of his football days.

"I played halfback and was named MVP (Most valuable player) for two years and won the Wiley Post award while playing for the team. Then I joined the U.S. Air Force."

Clyde served four years, including one year - 1954 - in Korea.

"When I came back I went to work for the Madera County Sheriff," he said. "Later I was named police chief in Mendota, Calif. I came to Carson City in 1964 and retired in 1992."

Kathy came to Carson City in 1983 from Texas.

"I was tired of living in Texas and I had an uncle living here so I made the move," she said. "At first I owned and operated Kathy's Country Catering in Carson City. That was from 1984-89 and then I went to work as a bartender at the Come-On-In bar in Carson City. That's when I met Clyde - He's known in town as Slidin' Clyde - When a friend introduced us. We started dating and got married a year later."

HE BOUGHT HER A BAR

In 1991 Clyde "Bought the bar" for Kathy and they renamed it Kathy's Some Place Else.

"Clyde was the one who named it that," added a smiling Kathy. "It's the home of karaoke in Carson City. We're a large dart bar too. We have teams and tournaments. Darts and karaoke are our main things. We have karaoke seven days a week at all hours of the day and night. We open at noon everyday."

Kathy's Someplace Else is located at 4750 Highway 50 east and they "hold a lot" of fundraisers for local non-profit groups there and they have weddings performed there also.

"We've had seven there so far," she added. "I like my bar .... Clyde and I both work there. It's a mom and pop bar and everyone there calls me mom."

Sounds like a fun place and I told Kathy and Clyde someday I'm going to get out there for a visit.

"You can even get married here," said a laughing Kathy as I got ready to leave. "It's a fun place and we do have fun there."

No chance on that marriage stuff but a "fun" visit is certainly something that's in the cards ....

A BIG ONE

That would be the Nevada State Chili Cookoff to determine the state champion in competition red chili, green chili and salsa. The cookoff takes place Saturday on the plaza at Harrah's Reno. Admission is free.

Many of our local cooks will compete at the ICS non-profit cookoff - The winners automatically qualify for the world championships in October in Las Vegas - And you can see most of them tonight on our Street Talk TV Show on CAT-10 as we replay the Carson City Invitational Chili cookoff that took place last month in Carson City.
