Stronger storm expected by weekend

A stronger storm system comparable to last weekend's disturbance is heading for the Sierras on Sunday.

Rain in the valleys and snow in the higher elevations is expected during the weekend in a storm with more moisture than Wednesday's storm, National Weather Service Meteorologist Steve Goldstein said.

The forecast for Saturday calls for a slight chance of snow showers, with lows in the upper teens and 20s and highs in the mid-40s to lower 50s. By Sunday, that chance of rain or snow showers increases.

Rain fell on Carson residents Wednesday, but the storm didn't pack enough punch to cause road restrictions on Donner or Mount Rose summits as of Wednesday afternoon.

Meteorologist Dave Pike said the bulk of the storm was expected to hit Wednesday night.

It is predicted to be mostly cloudy today with a slight chance of mainly mountain showers. Snow level is expected to drop to 4,500 feet in the north to 5,500 feet in the south. Highs are expected in the mid- to upper-40s. Peak said that it should turn partly cloudy by tonight. The area should dry up today and Friday, Peak said.

The Carson City street department reported no cases of flooding although sporadic rain fell in the Carson area all day Wednesday.

Between 1/25th of an inch and 29/100ths of an inch of rain accumulated in the valley.

Diamond Peak Ski Resort reported 4 inches to 6 inches of new snow from Wednesday's storm. Mount Rose Summit had about 4 inches of snow and Echo Summit picked up 3.5 inches of snow.
