SAN DIEGO - A 13-year-old boy collapsed and died Tuesday while warming up for an outdoor basketball game as part of a physical education class, authorities said.
''The boy had only been out on the playing field for less than five minutes and he simply collapsed,'' said Winifred Whelan, assistant principal at Montgomery Middle School. ''There was no sign of uncomfortableness or anything else.''
Teachers tried to revive the eighth-grader by performing CPR, but he had no pulse by the time paramedics arrived about 2:30 p.m. He was taken to Scripps Hospital in Chula Vista, where he was pronounced dead.
The San Diego County medical examiner plans to perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Whelan said the boy's school medical file showed no pre-existing health condition that would have explained his collapse.
