Traditional parade readies for Nov. 11

VIRGINIA CITY - A Veteran's Day tradition continues with a parade in this historic Comstock town.

"We encourage as many parade participants as possible," said Julie Lee, executive director of the Virginia City Chamber of Commerce and one of the parade organizers.

The parade will begin at 11 a.m. Nov. 11, commemorating the exact time and date when the World War II armistice was signed.

"All veterans are welcome to participate, as either individuals or as a part of an organization. We especially invite military vehicle collectors and enthusiasts and encourage them to wear period uniforms."

The parade will include military color guards, Pearl Harbor survivors, World War II military vehicles, floats and more.

The parade begins at the Fourth Ward School at the south end of C Street and ends at the parking area at the north end of town, where a plaque commemorating the 54th anniversary of World War II is situated.

"A fly-over by jets from Fallon Air Station will take place, weather permitting," she said.

After the parade, veterans and their families are invited to a luncheon at the Storey County Senior Center, located at Mill and E streets.

"Besides veterans, either singularly or in groups, we also need marching bands, fire fighting units, military and antique automobiles and all other groups that wish to pay homage to our veterans," said Lorraine Du Fresne, parade chairwoman.

Participants will form at 10 a.m. at the south end of C Street by Fourth Ward School.
