Two killed in separate accidents

Two people were killed in separate traffic accidents Tuesday on northern Nevada highways.

The Nevada Highway Patrol said a 32-year-old Yerington man was killed at 6:30 a.m. in a two-vehicle collision on U.S. Highway 95 five miles south of Silver Springs.

The victim, David Wipf, was northbound on the highway when his pickup was struck by a another pickup entering the highway from a side road.

The driver of that pickup, Virgil Sherman, 76, of Silver Springs, was seriously injured and taken to Reno's Washoe Medical Center.

An investigation reveals Sherman failed to stop at a stop sign before entering the highway, and the victim was not wearing a seat belt.

In the other fatal, the NHP said Nancy Sweet, 43, of Reno, was killed at 10:30 a.m. when she tried to make a left-hand turn from Thomas Creek Road onto Nevada Route 431 south of Reno.

She didn't appear to see an oncoming vehicle on the highway and her car was struck, troopers said. The other vehicle was driven by Nuzhat Baker, 45, of Reno, who escaped with minor injuries.
