A 28-year-old Las Vegas man wanted on a warrant for trafficking nearly eluded police Saturday after a foot chase and scuffle where the arresting officer said the suspect was trying to take his gun.
Daniel Frank Sims, unemployed from Las Vegas, was arrested at 5:45 p.m. after a Carson City Sheriff's Department deputy pulled over the car Sims was riding in for having a broken headlight.
According to police reports, when the deputy approached the vehicle, he saw Sims fidgeting in the backseat.
"I observed the rear passenger (Sims) was moving his hands and would not sit still," the report states.
When the officer checked for warrants, Sims came back with a Las Vegas Justice Court warrant for suspicion of felony trafficking with a $10,000 bail.
As the deputy began to frisk Sims for weapons he took off running east on Division Street, the report states.
According to the report, the officer caught up with Sims at Nevada and Caroline streets where he ordered Sims to the ground. Instead, Sims punched the deputy in the chest several times and then reached for the officer's gun. Eventually, additional help arrived for the officer and Sims was apprehended.
He is being held in the Carson City Jail on a $40,000 bail. He is charged with the Vegas warrant, felony battery on a police officer and misdemeanor obstructing a peace officer.
