United Blood Services is making appointments for people to donate blood throughout the coming weeks.
Tom Choi, executive director in Reno, said the nation has adequate supply to meet short-term needs but is encouraging donations later on when a shortage could occur before donors are eligible to donate again. Call 887-9111 for an appointment in Carson City and 329-6451 in Reno.
Here is a list of some other ways people in the Carson City area are helping with relief efforts for victims of the Sept. 11 attacks in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C.
-- Vicki Palmer of Stamp A Lot, at 1951 N. Carson St., is making American Flags which say "God Bless America" and selling them for $3 with proceeds going to the American Red Cross. She is also accepting hand-stamped cards to send to victim's families. For information call 841-1888.
-- Douglas Animal Welfare Group will donate $25 for every dog adopted on Saturday and Sunday to the New York Firefighter Relief Fund.
The adoption will be at Lampe Park, in Gardnerville and begins at 10 a.m. Saturday with a pet parade.
-- The Carson City Library is helping Carson City Fire Department collect funds for the fallen firefighters in New York. Donations can be dropped of at the library. The library is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. and on Fridays, Saturdays and Mondays from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
-- Scolari's Food and Drug Company is accepting donations to the Red Cross at all of their 19 Northern Nevada and California stores. For information call John Stampfli (775) 322-2020.
-- Baum Healing Arts Center School of Massage Therapy will donate all proceeds from its student massage clinic to the Firemen's Relief Fund and the American Red Cross. Collections began Sept. 11. Massages are available by appointment between the hours of 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Saturday through Thursday and Monday through Thursday between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. A one-hour massage is $25. -- Action Watersports at Timber Cove Marina in South Lake Tahoe will donate the proceeds from rides on its Tahoe Thunder and Windsong to the relief fund for firefighters and police officers. Call (530) 541-7245 for reservations.
-- Fallon's Junior Midget Pop Warner football organization has donated its money for awards and an end-of-the-season pizza party to the American Red Cross. The check will be passed at 8 p.m. Friday at Fallon Junior High School.
-- Employees at Harrah's and Harveys Lake Tahoe and 22 other Harrah's Entertainment Inc. locations are donating to several funds for victims of the Sept. 11 attacks. The employee donations, from more than 40,000 employees, are to be added to the $1 million given by Harrah's Entertainment
-- Employees at Prestige Auto Wash at 1727 Highway 50 East are donating their pay for Sunday to aid the fund for New York firefighters' families. In addition, car wash owner Steve Sawyers has pledged to donate the proceeds from Saturday's business to the fund. Donations will be made from business during the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
-- Teri Basa and Tracey Thomson of Sugar Pine Cove, in the Copper Pointe Plaza, are making flag pins to be sold throughout the area to benefit the Widows and Children's Fund of the Uniformed Firefighters Association. Stop by and see them at 1087 N. Carson St. or call 884-4603.
-- Tailor Marsha Funk and several of her tailor friends have offered to help those in the military spiff up and repair their uniforms as they head out to serve their country. Call Funk at 883-6853
-- Payless Shoe Source will match donations dollar for dollar. Stop by the store in the shopping center next to Wal-Mart.
-- Clerks at Safeway can ring in a donation to the Red Cross as they ring in your groceries during checkout.
-- Donations are being accepted at the Carson City Senior Citizens Center, 911 Beverly Drive, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. All donations will be sent to the American Red Cross.
-- The Salvation Army is accepting donations, which may be mailed to P.O. Box 956, Carson City NV 89702. Checks should be made out to The Salvation Army, with Disaster Relief Fund noted in lower corner.
-- The Reno Fire Department will be holding a garage sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Reno Fire Department Station 3, 580 W. Moana Lane, Reno.
Help is needed in the form of donations, garage sale items or raffle items. All donated items can be dropped off at the nearest Reno Fire Department. All proceeds will go to the New York City Fire Department's Firefighters' Relief Fund.
