The following is part of an ever-growing list of those in the area giving of their selves, their time and money toward relief efforts on the East Coast.

Challenges

-- Debbie Balzer, a bartender at Harrigan's K Bar on Highway 50 East, is challenging all bartenders in the area to donate tips raised during Monday Night Football Oct. 1 to the American Red Cross' attack victims relief fund. Call Balzer at 882-6252.

-- Carson-Tahoe Hospital is launching a fund-raising campaign for victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The "Battle Born - America Rising" campaign encourages all to donate and is challenging physicians throughout Northern Nevada to donate $1,000 each to the American Red Cross' National Disaster Relief Fund. Donations can be made directly at U.S. Bank to account No. 153790365131 they can also be made at the hospital's volunteer desk.

-- A challenge has been issued by American International Tooling Inc. to manufacturers in the Carson City, Reno/Sparks area to donate a percentage of their sales toward relief efforts in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C.

Customers of the Carson City tooling company who order before Oct. 31 will see 2 percent of their purchases used to help victims of the attack.

Donations

Retailers at the Southgate Shopping Center in Carson City are collecting donations to aid with terrorist-related disaster relief efforts in New York. All contributions will be given to the Sierra Nevada Chapter of the American Red Cross.

-- The parent company of Carson City's Hess Microgen LLC has donated $5 million to help the families of New York firefighters, rescue workers and police officers who died or were injured helping victims at the World Trade Center.

-- Tens of thousands of dollars have been collected from 148 Raley's Food and Drug stores where customers have dropped cash at collection boxes at the check stands. Store officials say funds will be collected for disaster victims indefinitely. In addition, Raley's will pay local administration costs so that 100 percent of the donations goes to victims.

-- Employees at Harrah's and Harveys Lake Tahoe and 22 other Harrah's Entertainment Inc. locations are donating to several funds for victims of the Sept. 11 attacks. The employee donations, from more than 40,000 employees, are to be added to the $1 million given by Harrah's Entertainment.

-- Fallon's Junior Midget Pop Warner football organization has donated its money for awards and an end-of-the-season pizza party to the American Red Cross. The check will be passed at 8 p.m. Friday at Fallon Junior High School.

-- Citadel Communications will present a check for $112,000 to the Red Cross today. Citadel operates five radio stations in Reno, KBUL, KKOH, Magic, The Hawk, and Wild - and gathered funds through a variety of fund-raisers.

Services

-- The Carson Plaza Retirement home will honor victims of the attack at a tree planting memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday. The home is at 2120 E. Long St. Local firefighters and city officials are scheduled to attend.

-- A memorial service for firefighters, medical and law enforcement personnel who died during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks is set for 4 p.m. Sunday at the Douglas High School football field. The service is sponsored by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and the East Fork Fire and Paramedic District. The school is located on Highway 88 in Minden.

How to Help

-- The Nevada State Health Division has announced that New York is overwhelmed with medical personnel in the wake of last week's attacks and asks members of the medical community not to travel to New York to volunteer until a specific call is made by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The division sends its thanks all who have volunteered.

-- United Blood Services is making appointments for people to donate blood throughout the coming weeks.

Tom Choi, executive director in Reno, said the nation has adequate supply to meet short-term needs but is encouraging donations later on when a shortage could occur before donors are eligible to donate again. Call 887-9111 for an appointment in Carson City and 329-6451 in Reno.

-- Head for the movies Tuesday and donate to relief efforts. Wallace Theaters worldwide are donating 100 percent of Tuesday's ticket and concession sales to the American Red Cross and United Way disaster relief funds.

-- The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada gift shop will donate 25 percent of its weekend sales to the New York firefighters fund. The museum is open from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and is at 813 N. Carson St. For information call 884-2226

-- Employees at Prestige Auto Wash at 1727 Highway 50 East are donating their pay for Sunday to aid the fund for New York firefighters' families. In addition, car wash owner Steve Sawyers has pledged to donate the proceeds from Sunday's business to the fund. Donations will be made from business during the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

-- Vicki Palmer of Stamp A Lot, at 1951 N. Carson St., is making American Flags which say "God Bless America" and selling them for $3 with proceeds going to the American Red Cross. She is also accepting hand-stamped cards to send to victim's families. For information call 841-1888.

-- Douglas Animal Welfare Group will donate $25 for every dog adopted on Saturday and Sunday to the New York Firefighter Relief Fund.

The adoption will be at Lampe Park, in Gardnerville and begins at 10 a.m. Saturday with a pet parade.

-- The Carson City Library is helping Carson City Fire Department collect funds for the fallen firefighters in New York. Donations can be dropped of at the library. The library is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. and on Fridays, Saturdays and Mondays from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

-- Scolari's Food and Drug Company is accepting donations to the Red Cross at all of their 19 Northern Nevada and California stores. For information call John Stampfli (775) 322-2020.

-- Baum Healing Arts Center School of Massage Therapy will donate all proceeds from its student massage clinic to the Firemen's Relief Fund and the American Red Cross. Collections began Sept. 11. Massages are available by appointment between the hours of 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Saturday through Thursday and Monday through Thursday between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. A one-hour massage is $25. -- Action Watersports at Timber Cove Marina in South Lake Tahoe will donate the proceeds from rides on its Tahoe Thunder and Windsong to the relief fund for firefighters and police officers. Call (530) 541-7245 for reservations.

-- Eric and Teri Basa are making flag pins to be sold throughout the area to benefit the Sept. 11 fund set up by the United Way. Call them at 884-4603.

-- Tailor Marsha Funk and several of her tailor friends have offered to help those in the military spiff up and repair their uniforms as they head out to serve their country. Call Funk at 883-6853

-- Payless Shoe Source will match donations dollar for dollar. Stop by the store in the shopping center next to Wal-Mart.

-- Clerks at Safeway can ring in a donation to the Red Cross as they ring in your groceries during checkout.

-- Donations are being accepted at the Carson City Senior Citizens Center, 911 Beverly Drive, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. All donations will be sent to the American Red Cross.

-- The Salvation Army is accepting donations, which may be mailed to P.O. Box 956, Carson City NV 89702. Checks should be made out to The Salvation Army, with Disaster Relief Fund noted in lower corner.

-- The Reno Fire Department will be holding a garage sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Reno Fire Department Station 3, 580 W. Moana Lane, Reno.

Help is needed in the form of donations, garage sale items or raffle items. All donated items can be dropped off at the nearest Reno Fire Department. All proceeds will go to the New York City Fire Department's Firefighters' Relief Fund.
