A memorial service is scheduled in Carson City on Saturday for Navy jet pilot A. Jason Bayer, son of well-known lawyer Art Bayer, who died in a helicopter accident last week.
The service, to be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, follows a combined service Wednesday in Ridgecrest, Calif., for Lt. Cmdr. Bayer, 36, and Petty Officer Charles Chaco, 22, also killed in the crash.
Both men were aboard a Navy HH-1 Huey helicopter that crashed during a training exercise on a rugged Sierra Nevada ridge about three miles west of Kernville, Calif. Four others aboard the helicopter were injured.
Bayer was a last minute ride-along when another crew member became ill prior to the search-and-rescue exercise. The helicopter had taken off from the China Lake Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division. The crew members were with the Naval Weapons Test Squadron China Lake.
Besides his father, Bayer is survived by his pregnant wife, Ann, and the couple's 1-year-old daughter. His mother, Merry Ann Bayer, a Carson High School teacher, died in 1999.
A Carson High graduate, Bayer attended the University of Southern California before joining the Navy. Once in the Navy, he applied to pilot school and later was stationed in Japan and had been attached to a carrier air wing.
