Obituary: Wilbert T. "Shorty" Bay

Funeral services for Wilbert T. "Shorty" Bay, 88, a Carson City resident will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Walton's Chapel of the Valley.

Mr. Bay died Aug. 2, 2002, at Carson-Tahoe Hospital.

He was born Jan. 15, 1914, in Mountain View, Mo., to Dora and Jesse Bay.

He served in the Oklahoma National Guard before enlisting in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving with the 476th Engineers Maintenance from 1940 to 1946 in the South Pacific, including Saipan and the Marianas.

He received the Good Conduct Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, the American Defense Service Medal and the Meritorious Service Unit Plaque.

He married Gertrude March 17, 1946 in Topeka, Kan., and moved to Carson City in 1948.

A long-time businessman, he owned Carson Cab Company and furnished limousine service to the Tahoe area. He established Carson Home Improvements and built and operated the original Alie's Flower Shop on Roop Street. He was vice president of Air Master Corporation and a master mechanic in Reno. He later managed used car sales at Dick Diamond Motors.

Among his survivors are his wife; daughter and son-in-law Joanne and Gary Ford of Okeechobee, Fla.; sister and brother-in-law Thelma and John Maltese of Las Vegas; brother and sister-in-law Carl and Le Etta Bay of Newkirk, Ok.; nieces Marti Smith of Carson City, Darlene Bright of Spokane, Wash., Vickey Ebert of Blackwell, Okla.; and cousin Bill Webb of Pawnee, Okla., as well as numerous grand-nieces and nephews.

A graveside committal at Lone Mountain Cemetery will follow services.

Walton's Chapel of the Valley is in charge of the arrangements.
