Lodge to hold feed for boy

A cancer victim's mother, looking for a place to hold a spaghetti feed, found not only a location but a Carson City group willing to host the event.

The Carson City Elks Lodge has offered to put on the Sept. 6 fund-raiser for 3-year-old Daniel Morrison, who is suffering from brain cancer.

"Our cardinal principal of the Elks Lodge is charity and when we were asked to donate the use of the facilities we just figured, 'Heck, we'll do it all.' Its a great thing to give something back to the community," said Jim Smolenski, chairman of the trustees for the Carson City Elks Lodge.

Daniel was diagnosed in January with a brain tumor affecting the right side of his body. After surgery, his mother Kelly Barnes was told doctors had only managed to remove 50 percent of the tumor. It was cancerous and had spread to his brain stem.

After two months of chemotherapy, Barnes decided to look for an alternative.

"I had to stop. I was just watching him get sicker and sicker and it just made me ill," she said.

Barnes is treating Daniel with cancer-fighting foods and vitamins and with regular visits to the physician.

Smolenski said 100 percent of the proceeds from the dinner will go to the cost of Daniel's care.

He is hoping area businesses will donate goods for a raffle the night of the dinner.

"Come out and help us support a little boy," he said.

The dinner will be from 4-8 p.m. Sept. 6. Food, preparation and services will be donated by members of the Elks Lodge.

For a suggested donation of $5 per person, diners will be served spaghetti, salad, bread sticks and desert.

The Elks Lodge is at 515 N. Nevada St. at the corner of Robinson and Nevada streets.
