Woman charged in standoff

A Carson City woman was in jail Tuesday on charges stemming from a Monday night standoff with police.

Bexerly Mora, 46, was arrested Monday night after she held police at bay as she sat in her car in the parking lot of FitzHenry's Funeral Home and fired a gunshot through her windshield.

During that time she allegedly pointed a .38-caliber revolver at police as they tried to coax her from the car.

According to a police report, she wanted to "take a nurse hostage by gunpoint, force them to shoot her up with drugs, then kill herself."

Dispatch logs indicate Mora has a history of depression and is under a doctor's care.

She was charged with discharging a firearm out of a motor vehicle, assault with a deadly weapon, which are felonies. She also faces misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, destruction of property and gross misdemeanor aiming a firearm at another.

Mora is being held in the Carson City Jail on a emergency medical commitment.

Police said Mora telephoned them from a pay phone at 7 p.m. Monday and said she was armed and wanted paramedics to meet her at FitzHenry's and if she saw officers "someone would die."

After holding police off for more than an hour, Mora tossed away the weapon and drove to the rear of the business where officers pulled her from the vehicle, police reported. As she was arrested, Mora was heard shouting, "FitzHenry's ruined us!"

Mora's husband was fired from FitzHenry's in July, said general manager Jim Smolenski.

"Circumstances arose that I needed to terminate him. And that's as far as it went. I had to let him go," Smolenski said. "I don't feel that FitzHenry's has ruined their lives. Circumstances arise and people lose their jobs."

Smolenski said he was glad for the way things turned out.

"I applaud the sheriff's office for their handling of the situation and that they were able to talk her out of what she wanted to do. I'm sorry that it had to happen and FitzHenry's get involved this way."
