North Ridge homeowner Jami Mosbacher shows the damage left behind after a vehicle careened into her home Monday morning. Her son Christian, 5, frequently plays in that corner of the living room, Mosbacher said.
A Carson City man is in jail and a family is grateful to have escaped injury after a Jeep Cherokee plowed into an East Carson City home Monday morning.
"My children could have been killed. They could have been sitting there and got smashed," said Jami Mosbacher, 36.
Mosbacher said she was home with her two children and mother-in-law, Lillian Clark, about 10 a.m. when a Jeep driven by Kyle Higday, 25, careened through the northwest corner of her home at Northridge and Ridgecrest drives.
"Witnesses said he just ran a stop sign and was going like 60 miles an hour and crashed into my living room," she said.
Clark, who was sitting on a love seat in the living room, said the Jeep came to rest 3 feet inside the house and stopped just an inch from her.
"I thought it was an earthquake. I jumped up and ran across the room and then looked and realized it was a car," she said.
Since the crash, Clark said she is having difficulty hearing in her left ear.
Crews from Reel Construction were on the scene Monday putting plywood and plastic over the 4-by-7-foot indentation in the wall. A Reel building inspector is expected later this week to estimate the damage, but a company spokeswoman, who noted she hadn't examined the home, said it could take thousands of dollars to repair.
"My children play in that corner all the time," Mosbacher said. "I have always feared something like this was going to happen."
She said in the two years she's lived in the neighborhood of newly constructed houses, at least two neighbors have had similar experiences with vehicles hitting their homes.
"People just drive so fast down these roads. It takes us forever to just walk across the street to check our mail. I won't let my children play outside," she said.
"We want the whole town to know that they need to take their speed down in this area. This is what can happen. Someone could be killed."
Higday was arrested on suspicion of speeding, driving on a suspended license, violation of a stop sign and no insurance. His bail was set at $1,445.
