Douglas reviews school strategic plan

Douglas County educators will be reviewing the school district's strategic plan Friday and Saturday.

Born in controversy, the plan was a campaign issue in the 1994 election after its adoption in February of that year.

However, only one candidate of the four seeking to overturn the plan won election to the school board and he resigned within 18 months of his election.

While discussed in subsequent elections, few candidates took issue with it.

This year's review will be conducted by the Douglas County School District Strategic Planning Committee beginning 8 a.m. Friday and Saturday at the Carson Valley Middle School Library.

Public comment is scheduled for 4 p.m. Friday and 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

During the meeting the committee will receive detailed progress reports of the accomplishments made on each of the 11 strategies during the past year.

A review of the mission statement, beliefs, goals, commitments and each of the strategies and action plans will be conducted and the revisions will be made as appropriate.

The strategic plan was developed in 1993 by a committee of 19 teachers, administrators, board members, parents and community/business leaders from both the lake and valley and from elementary middle and high school levels.

The strategic plan was adopted by the board of trustees Feb. 28, 1994 during a meeting attended by more than 200 people, many of whom spoke against it.

At that meeting, then-Superintendent Pendery Clark told residents that the plan was not a final document, but would be revised to provide direction for the district.

Since then, the committee undergoes changes as new members bring their own ideas and strengths to the process.

Only two of the original committee members are still serving on the committee. During the review, the direction the district will follow in the coming year is identified, strategies are placed in priority and the allocation of district resources is determined.

The public is invited. Copies of the current strategic plan are available at all of the district's schools, at the district office (751 Mono Ave., Minden) and will be available at the meeting.
