Obituary Chris Nolan Sr.

Chris Nolan Sr., 87, a Carson City resident for the past 30 years, died March 17, 2002 at his home. He was born May 29, 1914, in New York City, to Chris and Hazel Nolan.

He attended the University of Southern California majoring in journalism.

He married Marjorie Small on Jan. 7, 1939, in Yuma, Ariz.

Mr. Nolan worked for Douglas Aircraft during World War II. After the war he started a company which produced signage for businesses and highway signs for the newly constructed Hollywood Freeway. In 1966, he moved to the the island of Maui in Hawaii where he was employed by AMFAC as the assistant manager of the Kaanapali Airport. There he gave landing instructions to the pilots, maintained the weather station and operated the on-site fire truck.

He moved to Incline Village in 1969 where he became active with the Lake Tahoe Coast Guard.

He relocated to Carson City in 1972 where he served as executive director of the Carson Regional Counsel for Drug Abuse, devoting much time to operating the organization's thrift shop. He served as the Lakeview Fire Chief for 10 years and was recognized by the Nevada Division of Forestry when the WNCC Fire Station was dedicated in his honor in 1988.

Mr. Nolan was a model builder and artist and made pen and ink drawings of the V&T Railroad. He was well-versed in the history of the Civil War. While in Los Angeles, he was in the Sheriff's Posse and rode on many search and rescue missions.

Among his survivors are his wife Marge; sons Barry of Aqua Dulce, Calif., and son and daughter-in-law Chris Jr. and Jean of Carson City; grandchildren Diana Nolan of Canyon Country, Calif., Don Nolan and wife Aqua Dulce and four great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at Lone Mountain Cemetery.
