Colonial Dames Support Sarah Winnemucca statue

Colonial Dames XVII Century members have voted to support the Nevada Women's History Project to designate Sarah Winnemucca as Nevada's second statute to be placed in the National Statuary Hall in the United States Capitol.

From their Treasury, Colonial Dames will present the Nevada Women a check for $100.

"This is a very worthwhile cause. Sarah Winnemucca was a 'believer in the brotherhood of mankind' which is a quote on the first Nevada historical marker dedicated to a woman," said President Joanne Byerly. "She is known for her work as an educator, writer (author of 'Life Among the Paiutes'), interpreter and negotiator for the army to her people and was responsible for getting Fort McDermitt a reservation for the Paiutes."

Sarah Winnemucca is listed in Notable American Women, 1607-1950, (published by Brown University Press), the Encyclopedia Britannica and in Herstory: Women Who Changed the World.

Colonial Dames XVII Century is an organization for women whose ancestor or ancestors arrived in America in the 1600s and set the foundation for what was to become our country's democratic government. They believe that Sarah Winnemucca has ancestors who, although they did not participate in formulating our government, did arrive before the 1600s, and Colonial Dames Society members share this kinship with her.
