Moms honored at Telegraph Square

It was a perfect afternoon at Telegraph Square. People milled on the streets as pink and white balloons bobbed in a light spring breeze. Moms were giving their children pep talks about touching the breakables in local shops, as the men hunched over burgers, fries and a beer at sidewalk tables.

"We came down to buy a Mother's Day card and stumbled onto this, but I think it's great," said Carson City resident Nancy Merritt. "It's quaint, and gives us an excuse to come down here."

Coordinated by local businesses, this event was called Mother's Day at Telegraph Square and there was something for everyone.

Lofty Expressions gift shop offered free tea tasting. Beauty and the Beads was holding a special sale and Mo and Sluggo's was offering free chocolate strawberries.

"We wanted to do something special to celebrate Mother's Day and we thought the moms would be too busy on Sunday," said Rene Mayo, spokesperson for the Horseshoe Club.

According to Doreen Mack, owner of Lofty Expressions, this event is a prelude. Starting in mid to late June, music and more will be featured this summer for Thursdays on the Square, the events once again sponsored by the Telegraph Square Group.
