The trains will roll at the Nevada State Railroad Museum over Thanksgiving weekend with steam train rides featuring equipment from the historic Virginia & Truckee Railroad.
The museum will give free rides on Friday and Saturday to anyone who donates blood to United Blood Services. Call 887-9111 in Carson City to make an appointment and receive a ticket for a Thanksgiving weekend ride.
Trains will run at 40-minute intervals from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Regular fare is $2.50 age 11 or older, $1 for ages 6 to 11 and free for children under 6 .
After riding the train, visitors may tour the museum buildings to see restored locomotives and rolling stock, including V&T No. 22, the "Inyo," oldest operating steam locomotive in the United States. Admission to the museum is $2; children under 18 are admitted free.
Weather permitting, museum volunteers will give free handcar rides.
In keeping with the holiday spirit, the museum is a drop-off point for the Marine Corps Reserve's annual Toys for Tots campaign, which helps make the holidays more enjoyable for the needy.
The museum will be closed Thanksgiving Day.
The Nevada State Railroad Museum operates steam-ups with historic Virginia & Truckee Railroad equipment on selected weekends throughout the year. A train is scheduled for Dec. 7. The museum's 1926 motorcar will operate on Sunday, Dec. 1, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 30-minute intervals. The fare for the motorcar is $1 for adults, 50 cents for children age 6 to 11, and free for children under 6. The annual holiday Santa Train runs Dec. 14 and 15, Santa Train rides and museum admission are free both
days.
The museum, open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., is on Highway 395 at the south end of Carson City at the intersection of Fairview Avenue. For information, contact John Frink at 687-6953.
