Homeless man identified

A homeless man found dead in a West Carson City field was identified by police Thursday.

Glenn Edward Gilbreath, 52, was found by a friend face-down in a field on Curry Street early Monday morning. Initially, police were suspicious because of blood at the scene, but an autopsy later determined he died from heart failure.

Monte Fast, director of Friends In Service Helping, said Gilbreath was known to his organization, which offers food, clothing and shelter to those in need.

"We were very well acquainted with him," he said. "Much of our service to him was in the free meals in the dining room, but we also sent him to Welfare and tried to get him a job."

At one point, Gilbreath stayed at the FISH shelter. Fast said records indicate he came from California, had grown children, and became homeless after a trailer he was living in was sold.

Sheriff's detective Sgt. Steve Schuette said the department was unable to locate any next of kin to notify about Gilbreath's death.

If no one is found, the county will be responsible for his remains, Fast said.
