While most government offices and schools will be closed Thursday and Friday in the Carson City area for the Thanksgiving holiday, some retail stores will be open longer.
With the exception of Carson City Senior Center, which is open and serving lunch Friday, all other area senior centers will be closed.
The Carson City Library will be closed Thursday and Friday then reopen Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Douglas County Library, also closed Thursday and Friday, will be open Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Getting married could still be an option this weekend as the Carson City Marriage Bureau will be open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday through Sunday.
The Douglas County marriage license offices at Stateline in Lake Tahoe and in Minden will be open this weekend. The Stateline office will be staffed from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. A clerk will be available by pager at the Minden office at 782-9015.
Carson City and Lyon and Storey counties' government offices will be closed Thursday and Friday.
The Carson City Sheriff's Department front office will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Wednesday and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday.
The Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada in Carson City will be closed Thursday and Friday.
Local schools will be closed Thursday and Friday. Western Nevada Community College classes will not be in session Wednesday through Friday.
U.S. Postal Service offices will be closed Thursday, but open for business Friday. Only Express Mail will be delivered Thursday.
Plenty of places to stroll and shop will be found beginning Friday in downtown Carson City and the surrounding area.
Though signs of the holiday season already have arrived, stores are preparing to welcome shoppers with extended hours.
Doreen Mack, owner of Lofty Expressions and Idea House on West Telegraph Street, said she plans to be open seven days a week beginning this weekend. Her downtown shop will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Other shops in Telegraph Square that will be open Friday include A Treasure Basket, Beauty and the Beads, Head Rush salon and Sasha's dress shop.
The Wal-Mart Superstore in Douglas County and Super Kmart in north Carson City will remain open all week 24 hours a day. Target in Douglas County will begin extended hours, closing at 11 each night beginning Monday, but will be closed Thursday.
The Carson Nugget Coffee Shop, 800 N. Carson St., will open its doors again this year to anyone who may not otherwise get Thanksgiving dinner. A free traditional meal of roast turkey or baked ham with all the trimmings will be served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday.
To accept the offer, customers just need to sign the check, hand it to the cashier and say, "I'm a guest of the Nugget today."
