Nevadans are more likely than other
Americans to belong to a gym, says a
study commissioned by a trade group.
The International health, Racquet
and Sportsclub Association found that
18.5 percent of the state's residents over
age 6 belong to a health club. That ties
Nevada for tops with South Dakota.
Colorado and Massachusetts were
the only other states in which more than
18 percent of the population belongs to
a health club, said the group.
Among American metropolitan
areas, Las Vegas ranked fifth in club
membership at 18 percent. Tops was
Orlando, where 24.9 percent of the population
belongs to a gym.
The association didn't break out figures
for the Reno metropolitan area.
Heath-club members nationwide go to
the gym an average of 93 days a year, the
study found. That's a 27 percent increase
since 1987.
