NDOT to aid motorists at Spaghetti Bowl

The Nevada Department of

Transportation soon will be helping stranded

drivers on a congested section of

Interstate 80.

NDOT's Free Motorist Assist Program

will consist of two vans and three people

cruising the Spaghetti Bowl during rush

hour to help get disabled cars to get up and

running again.

Due to the department's 3-year, $52

million Spaghetti Bowl project, the highway's

shoulders will be reduced. That creates

a problem for motorists who have

run out of gas or have a flat tire because

they can't get out of the way of traffic,

said Scott Magruder, NDOT's public

information officer.

The program is modeled on a successful

one in Las Vegas, said Magruder. The vans

will operate Monday through Friday, from

6-10 a.m. and 3-7 p.m.

NDOT discussed the new program at a

meeting last week with Reno-Sparks businesses

that may be affected by the project.

NDOT has set up a web site about the

project www.renospaghettibowl.com -

that is updated weekly.
