Fund-raiser planned for Bordewich-Bray

Bordewich-Bray Elementary School officials are shifting their fund-raising efforts into high gear.

The parent-teacher association is teaming with Carson Dodge to raise money for the school's extracurricular budget and to fund new playground equipment and library books.

"We lost some of our books because of the mold in the library," Principal Sue Keema said.

Carson Dodge representatives will be at the school from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday allowing parents to test-drive minivans and other popular cars. For every adult who test drives a new Dodge and completes a questionnaire, Dodge will donate $10 to the PTA.

Keema said it is a partnership that benefits everyone involved.

"It's an easy way for our school to earn some money with minimal effort," she said "And Carson Dodge can test their product with the consumer."

The fund-raiser will coincide with the school's annual Raising Readers activity to promote literacy.

Raising Readers will begin at 6:30 p.m. where teachers will introduce parents with the Success for All reading program at the school.

The program incorporates 30 minutes of reading education into the school's daily curriculum.

"Our No. 1 priority is teaching our children to read," Keema said. "If they can't read, how can they learn science or social studies? How can they read the problems in math?"

She said when parents understand how the school is teaching literacy, they can use the same tools at home.

"The best partnership is when the school and parents work together," Keema said.
