Winners of the Carson City student essay contest were announced during Tuesday's school board meeting.
The contest was open to students in public and private schools as well as home-school students. The theme was, "The Pledge of Allegiance after Sept. 11: What it means to me and my country."
District officials received 253 entries. Photos of the first-place winners as well as their essays will be published in Saturday's Nevada Appeal.
The winners in the elementary school division are:
First Place: Zack Carlevato, second grade, Capitol Christian
Second Place: Spencer Roberts, fifth grade, Fritsch Elementary
Third Place: Alex Fallon, fifth grade, Fritsch Elementary
Jessica Peterson, fourth grade, Seeliger Elementary
Fourth Place: Haydn Jensen, fifth grade, Seeliger Elementary
Fifth Place: Kahlia Pimental, third grade, St. Teresa
Middle school winners are:
First Place: Michael Colyer, seventh grade, St. Teresa
Second Place: Yvette Rae Hollett, eighth grade, and Kyle Jones, eighth grade, Brooks Westergard, eighth grade, all St. Teresa
Third Place: Hannah Works, eighth grade, Carson Middle School
Fourth Place: Harrison Roberts, seventh grade, Eagle Valley Middle School
Fifth Place: Lauren Easby, eighth grade, Carson Middle School
High school winners, all juniors from Carson High School, are:
First Place: Rebecca Higgs
Second Place: Victor Morrow
Third Place: Randi Cole, Erin Higgs
Fourth Place: Kayla Garcia, Ashley Gonzales, Chris MacMahon, Cassia Roth and Heather Stevens
Fifth Place: Heather Kuhn
