Storms clogs Sierra roads, soaks capital

The spring storm that dumped up to 3 feet of snow at Lake Tahoe ski resorts over the weekend dropped mostly rain and sleet on Carson Sunday.

While residents at Zephyr Cove were reporting up to 2 feet of white stuff Sunday afternoon, Carson folks saw winds and ponds at the usual intersections.

Avalanche controls closed U.S. 50 at Meyers, Calif., and chains were mandatory between there and Kyburz.

Westbound Interstate 80 traffic was being held at the Nevada-California line at dusk Sunday and chains were mandatory over Donner Summit.

Chains or snow tires were mandatory on many other Sierra roads. California's Highway 89 was closed through the Bliss State Park area.

In the valleys of western Nevada, the storm produced nearly one-half inch of precipitation, mostly in the form of rain or rain mixed with snow. Four inches of snow fell at the Stead Fire Department and a National Weather Service employee reported 5 inches at 5,360 feet in the Reno foothills.

Lows Sunday night in Carson dropped into the 20s, with occasional snow showers.

Today there should be a continued chance of showers with more of the same drizzly, windy weather, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. Snow could fall today as low as 5,000 -- just above the altitude of the Capital.

Tuesday will be partly cloudy with a slight chance of showers over the hills. The snow level is expected to continue at around 5,500 feet.
