Assembly votes to repeal ban on cell phones at school

The Nevada Assembly voted Monday to repeal a 2-year-old ban on students having cell phones in public schools.

Assemblyman David Goldwater, D-Las Vegas, said AB138 isn't being followed by districts, and that cell phones are an important tool for a growing number of parents who want to keep track of their children.

Assemblyman Bernie Anderson, D-Sparks, a high school government teacher, argued against lifting the ban.

But Goldwater said AB138 allows each school district to adopt policies controlling the use and possession of pagers and cell phones by students.

AB138 goes to the Senate for consideration.
